Henkels & McCoy  is now seeking a Fiber Designer for its San Diego, CA office.  The Fiber Designer will be responsible for designing fiber network work orders.   This shall include, but not be limited to, fiber cable sizing, assignment of dedicated fiber counts to existing/future customers and supervision of engineering design subcontractor(s).  This position reports to the OSP Engineering Manager.  



The ideal candidate will be a Telecommunications professional who has knowledge using fiber count sizing software, understands fiber count assignments, supervising engineering subcontractor(s), and who can work with limited supervision reporting to the OSP Engineering Manager.  All candidates should be fully knowledgeable of the requirements set forth in Time Warner, CenturyLink, Verizon, AT&T, Crown Castle and other CATV/CLEC/ILEC companies and/or practices for electrical protection and have an understanding of the Bell core Blue Book Standards, National Electric Code, and the National Electric Safety Code.  

Major Job Elements


Duties may include, but are not limited to, designing outside plant fiber facilities, field audits, records verification, general documents preparation, data entry, creating work order construction prints, records posting, fiber count re-arrangements, and routine work order functions.




This position will be responsible for fiber design and field survey of outside plant aerial and underground network facilities and associated infrastructure.  This includes:

  • Prepare manual redline drawings when required.
  • Prepare electronic drawings using computer aided drafting systems when required.
  • Compile data required for the preparation of plans or work order drawings.
  • Acquire the necessary field information, record verifications, document preparation, required to prepare work order documentation.
  • Design and redline outside plant network facilities and applicable infrastructure routes from FTP termination point to customer access point or any segment in between.
  • Coordinate access to professional/private facilities (e.g., schools, hospitals, military bases, etc.) when applicable.
  • Perform field site meets; meet with developers, customers, local agencies.
  • Understanding of telephone industry standards, local telecom practices and procedures.
  • Work in a team environment.
  • Perform under minimum supervision.
  • Communicate with internal staff and customer with appropriates media’s (email, fax, phone, video, etc.).
  • Field check design layouts.
  • Office check designs and redline changes.
  • Recognize process waste and suggest changes.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Operate Microsoft Office software.
  • Time management; prioritizing work and documenting tasks.
  • Reporting anomalies to project management stakeholders through established tools or verbally.
  • Keeping a clean and organized work station both physically and virtually.
  • Punctual for daily start time and meetings.



  • Understanding of aerial, underground, OSP copper, fiber and substructure design.
  • Understanding of telephone industry standards, local telecom practices and procedures.
  • Understanding of local, city, state and governmental rules and regulations associated with permit requirements.
  • Two years’ experience as a Telecom OSP Fielder or similar and relative engineering experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office program, OSP record data base applications, and computer aided drafting systems.
  • Ability to perform field site meets; meet with developers, customers, local agencies.
  • Work in a team environment.
