Henkels & McCoy, Inc., one of the most reliable and innovative firms in utilities engineering and construction, is currently seeking a Gas Systems Senior Designer/Designer 3 to be part of the Technical Services group team. Successful candidates will provide design and technical skills to a team of engineers, designers, and planners that are participating in a variety of natural gas related projects.

 

Major Job Elements

 

  • Prepare preliminary and detailed design drawings and specifications as required to customer requirements for natural gas system designs.
  • Perform review of customer specifications and standards including typical drawing preparation to support the construction of natural gas system. Work may include plans, sections and details, Flow Diagrams, and Piping and Instrument Diagram drawings for new gas systems, existing gas system retrofits, piping systems for hydrotesting, meter and regulation station designs, or other related facilities.
  • Prepare construction plans, material requirements, and cost estimates for natural gas infrastructure and facilities (pipe, valves, fittings. meters and regulation equipment).
  • Prepare permit and traffic control documents and plans as required.
  • Participate in development of Standard Operating Procedures and Work Flow Processes for existing and new projects.
  • Review project requirements to determine necessary resources, time lines and budgets to ensure technical and safety expectations are realized to meet both, customer and internal specifications.
  • Meet with or update Customer and H&M management weekly on the project status.
  • Must be able to work multiple projects at the same time and meet all requirements.
  • Communicate and resolve any design issues with internal and external customers.
  • Comply with all safety requirements- reinforce all internal and external safety practices and policies. (e.g., OSHA, DOT, PPE, etc.).
  • Meet with customers to gather technical requirements.
  • Prepare manual redline drawings and High Level Designs when required.
  • Prepare electronic drawings using computer aided drafting systems.
  • Coordinate access to professional/private facilities (e.g., schools, hospitals, military bases, etc.) when applicable.
  • Perform field site meets; meet with developers, customers, local agencies.
  • Field check design layouts.
  • Office check designs and redline changes.
  • Recognize process waste and suggest changes.

General Requirements

 

  • Thorough knowledge and ability to use AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and other AutoCAD compatible software in the performance of the work.
  • Knowledge of engineering and design principles as they relate to natural gas pipeline or oil and gas environments.
  • High attention to detail
  • Team player with good communication skills. Communicate with internal staff and customer with appropriates media’s (email, fax, phone, video, etc.)
  • Time management; prioritizing work and documenting tasks.
  • Reporting anomalies to project management stakeholders through established tools or verbally.
  • Understanding of local, county, state permit requirements (e.g., Traffic Control, encroachment, Right Of Way, easement, etc.).
  • Wearing and utilizing all required safety PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) with situational awareness.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times. This includes but is not limited to driving safely, stretching twice a day, good posture / ergonomics, and following all safety rules.
  • Keeping a clean and organized work station both physically and virtually.
  • Rearranging work area to optimize safety and/or productivity.
  • Punctual for daily start time and meetings.
  • Fill out time keeping / accounting documentation on a daily or weekly basis.
  • Work after normal hours as needed.
  • Keeping a current state driver’s license without restrictions.
  • Daily schedule of 7am to 4pm Mon-Friday
    • 2 paid 15 minute breaks and 1 unpaid hour break

 

Qualifications

 

  • Associates degree or completion of related technical trade school coursework with emphasis on Design/Drafting training
  • 5 years natural gas engineering planning and design, or general oil and gas related piping related engineering and design experience. .
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), Autodesk AutoCAD is required. Knowledge and use of Bentley MicroStation software is a plus. Broad knowledge of natural gas or oil and gas related piping design for utility applications both underground and above ground preferred.
  • Knowledge of Federal Code 49-CFR-192 and California PUC General Order 112 is desired.
  • Experience with working with local, city, state and governmental rules and regulations associated with permit requirements (e.g., encroachment, Traffic Control).

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with the maintenance and operation of medium and low pressure gas distribution facilities is desired.
  • Experience working with pipe sizing software is desired.
  • Experience working with pipe stress analysis software is desired
  • Knowledge of Sempra Utilities, Southern California Gas Company (So Cal Gas), San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) engineering and construction standards
