Henkels & McCoy, Inc., one of the most reliable and innovative firms in utilities engineering and construction, is currently seeking a Supervisor, Gas Systems Planning and Design to be part of the Technical Services group team. The position will be responsible for supervising resources, operations, and maintaining customer relationships within the natural gas utilities industry. Our ideal candidate will have extensive natural gas utilities experience with an emphasis on gas systems - planning, estimating, engineering, and design.

Major Job Elements

Successful candidates will be expected to perform the following tasks as part of their normal work:

  • Developing and executing short-term and long-term goals based on enterprise goals, local and regional market indicators. This includes establishing an Engineering/Design office to perform gas system engineering related work. Includes office set-up, staff implementation, and supervision.
  • Communicates with internal and external customers in the performance of the work.
  • Maintain appropriate staffing level to meet ongoing operations and strategic objectives.
  • Follow safe work practices, implement company safety programs, and enforce guidelines/rules for all subordinates and contract workers.
  • Make contacts and develop business relationships with customers, subcontractors, vendors, and industry associations.
  • Meet revenue and profitability targets.
  • Develops sales leads, respond to bid requests, and craft proposals.
  • Participating in new candidate selection and pursuing high performing individuals.
  • Supervise groups of in-office and out-of-office staff.
  • Hold staff members accountable for policy violations and administer progressive discipline as necessary.
  • Establishes tracking methods and systems to measure and report productivity for weekly job progress on lump sum, hourly, or unit price work.
  • Direct the day-to-day operations of engineering/planning/design projects.
  • Review and approve time keeping/accounting documentation on a daily or weekly basis.
  • Approve weekly payroll and equipment reporting for the entire operating unit.
  • Work independently as well as interact with team members, client and management staff.
  • Determining, identifying, and correcting problem areas.
  • Provide documentation, reports, and information to Management as required.
  • Schedule and monitor field data collection activities.
  • Compile and submit reports to clients as required.
  • Oversee all related job accident/damage reporting and follow-up.
  • Hold employees accountable for the appearance of H&M equipment and property.
  • Assist in resolving construction issues (level of productivity, work interface, etc.) as required.

  • Work in a safe manner at all times. This includes but is not limited to driving safely, stretching twice a day, good posture / ergonomics, and following all safety rules.
  • Keeping a clean and organized work station both physically and virtually.
  • Rearranging work area to optimize safety and/or productivity.
  • Punctual for daily start time and meetings.
  • Keeping a current state driver’s license without restrictions.
  • Travel as required.


  • Accredited Bachelor’s degree or as a minimum an Associate’s degree in Engineering, Business, Project Management or an applicable field of study; or associated field experience
  • 10+ years of engineering, planning, or design experience in the gas utilities industry
  • Familiar with standard engineering/design and construction practices and supporting calculations associated with gas systems
  • Proficient user of Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, and Excel



  • Extensive knowledge of Sempra Utilities, Southern California Gas Company (So Cal Gas), San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), and Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) design engineering and construction standards.
  • Current Civil or Mechanical Professional Engineering license
  • Project Management (PMP) certification
  • Business Development experience
  • Construction experience
