Henkels & McCoy, Inc., one of the most reliable and innovative firms in utilities engineering and construction, is currently seeking a Telecom Senior Designer / Designer 3 to be part of the Technical Services group team. Successful candidates will provide design and technical skills to a team of engineers, designers, and planners to participate in a variety of communications oriented projects.

Major Job Elements

  • Prepare preliminary and detailed designs, drawings and specifications to customer requirements of outside plan network facilities.
  • Perform field audits of utility poles identifying service providers and cable types (e.g., CATV, COAX cable, Fiber cable, copper cable,), hardware, span lengths and attachment heights.
  • Prepare construction plans, material requirements, and cost estimates for Outside Plant (OSP) infrastructure and network facilities associated with aerial and underground projects (e.g., conduit, cables, terminals, permits, labor).
  • General documents preparation, data entry, creating work order construction prints, records posting, cable count re-arrangements, and filling out joint pole applications.
  • Participate in development of Standard Operating Procedures and Work Flow Processes for existing and new projects.
  • Review project requirements to determine necessary resources, time lines and budgets to ensure technical and safety expectations are realized to meet both, customer and internal specifications.
  • Meet with or update Customer and H&M management weekly on the project status.
  • Ability to work multiple projects at the same time and meet all requirements.
  • Communicate and resolve any design issues with internal and external customers.
  • Comply with all safety requirements- reinforce all internal and external safety practices and policies. (e.g., OSHA, NEC, PPE, etc.).
  • Meet with clients to gather technical requirements.
  • Prepare manual redline drawings and High Level Designs when required.
  • Prepare electronic drawings using computer aided drafting systems when required.
  • Fill out Wind Loading / Pole Loading forms.
  • Coordinate access to professional/private facilities (e.g., schools, hospitals, military bases, etc.) when applicable.
  • Perform field site meets; meet with developers, customers, local agencies.
  • Understanding of local, county, state permit requirements (e.g., Traffic Control, encroachment, Right Of Way, easement, etc.).
  • Field check design layouts.
  • Office check designs and redline changes.
  • Recognize process waste and suggest changes.

  • Communicate with internal staff and customer with appropriates media’s (email, fax, phone, video, etc.)
  • Time management; prioritizing work and documenting tasks.
  • Reporting anomalies to project management stakeholders through established tools or verbally.
  • Wearing and utilizing all required safety PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) with situational awareness.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times. This includes but is not limited to driving safely, stretching twice a day, good posture / ergonomics, and following all safety rules.
  • Keeping a clean and organized work station both physically and virtually.
  • Rearranging work area to optimize safety and/or productivity.
  • Punctual for daily start time and meetings.
  • Fill out time keeping / accounting documentation on a daily or weekly basis.
  • Work after normal hours as needed.
  • Keeping a current state driver’s license without restrictions.
  • Daily schedule of 7am to 4pm Mon-Friday
    • 2 paid 15 minute breaks and 1 unpaid hour break


  • 5 years OSP engineering planning and design or general engineering experience.
  • 2 years experience in Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) planning and design.
  • Broad knowledge of OSP planning and designing of both aerial and underground network facilities.
  • Extensive knowledge of OSP aerial and underground design and construction standards.
  • Knowledge of California PUC General Order 95, General Order 128, and Joint Pole Handbook.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), Autodesk AutoCAD, and pole structural analysis software.
  • Experience working with Pole / Structure Loading software.
  • Experience with working with local, city, state and governmental rules and regulations associated with permit requirements (e.g., encroachment, Traffic Control).
  • OSP construction experience (cable splicer or lineman)
  • Knowledge in O-Calc, PLS-CADD, GIS, FIM, or Spida-Calc software
  • BICSI Credential
  • Proficient in Autodesk AutoCAD / Bentley MicroStation
  • Familiar with Crown Castle, Verizon, and AT&T design standards
